Lassie – A Great Christmas Movie

‘One of the great dog movie’s of all time’ is probably not the most sought after accolade for a film director. Still, Charles Sturridge has done a fine piece of work with his new version of ‘Lassie’. He sticks to a classic piece of story-telling, with little in the way of special effects, and coaxs a fine performance from the dog herself.

The story involves a small boy in Yorkshire mining village who can’t afford to keep his dog anymore after his father loses his job. Lassie is sold to local aristocrats, but keeps escaping. Eventually, she is taken up to Scotland, but makes her way back to Yorkshire with many adventures along the way.

Perhaps the best thing about the film is that it plays it completely straight, with no attempts at post-modern irony, or in-jokes for the grown-ups. Anyone who doesn’t feel like seeing Narnia on account of The Multi-National of Very Little Brain having said it will write Christopher Robin out of the latest Pooh series could do a lot worse than see Lassie instead.
