Penguin Books Podcast Interview

Penguin PodcastI was chatting yesterday to Anna Rafferty, head of online for Penguin. She was telling me how Penguin emailed young bloggers who are fans of their Artemis Fowl books, to tell them about Artemis’s new website. Penguin (or Puffin as they are known to kids) were worried about getting the tone wrong, and perhaps upsetting the youngsters, by intruding into their blogging world. They decided to be as uncool as possible, explain who they were and why they were writing, and offer a sneak preview of the site. The result was a huge success and generated loads of interest.

If you would like to hear my chat with Anna, the audio is published over on our sister site.

All you blogger-readers out there, young and old, now you know that the big publishing houses are reading your blogs, so keep writing!

    Once upon a time,
there was a penguin who liked to eat popsicle sticks.

    The other penguins ate fish.
    “Num num num.”

“But, but, but, but” (not the bad word one)
“but,” said the penguin as he
    got a little Saftavand
    — Saftavand is a kind of juice that tastes like raspberry or mixed fruit
and froze it to a popsicle stick.

The penguin then licked it and said,
    “Mmmmm,
    it tastes yummy.”

    — I made my own popsicle sticks with apple juice and orange juice,
    but not the penguin.

The other penguins tried the popsicle stick, but
“Blaaaach, how can you like this stuff.”

“Well, I don’t like fish,” said the penguin.
    “I’m a Northwest Airline penguin.”
