A Scottish school has published a book of true stories about how children came to Scotland from abroad. Here are a few “Moving Stories” from the Bruntsfield Primary School in Edinburgh.
POLAND
MY name is Martyne and this is my story. I come from Poland and I was born in a small town called Leszczyny. It was great, no pollution, no big buildings. When I was eight years old I moved to Edinburgh. I was on a bus for two days and I was very tired. I went to school and I made new friends but I still miss Poland. I moved from there because there wasn’t any money.
NORWAY
BEFORE moving to Edinburgh I lived in Norway. I left Norway in 2002 on Christmas day. Me, my Mum and my Dad left because my Dad lived in Scotland and my Mum and Dad went to college in Edinburgh.
GERMANY
BEFORE the Second World War my great-grandparents moved from Dresden in Germany to Edinburgh. They came in seek of work. My great-grandfather could not speak much English, however this did not stop him gaining work, as he was a master of making sweeties.
INDIA
WHEN we moved it seemed so cold because we came from a hot country. Then as time went by we got more used to the cold. There were a few people who were racist to me because once I was going to the shops and a young teenager called me a racist word.
GREECE
MY story is about my Greek grandad. He moved from Greece to Burnt Island in Scotland.
He felt very cold and excited. He moved to build ships. He built two ships for two years.
NEPAL
MY mum was born in Palpa, Nepal and my dad was born in Ledbury, England. I was born in Cambridge. My gran was born in London, England. My granpa was born in Portsmouth, England. Nepal is very far from England.
CHINA
WHENI was a baby I lived in Luoyang China. My uncle was born in Yinchuan China. Most of my family still live in China.
