The first episode of
Jane Eyre on BBC television here in the UK proved highly enjoyable. Rochester (Toby Stephens) was more charming and less rough and ready than usual. Jane (Ruth Wilson) has a wide mouth that can turn into the faintest of smiles. The lovely pale countryside was the real star. It’s the sort of stuff that makes us think the compulsory licence fee is still worth it. After a week of numerous American channels in a hotel room in Seattle, I am back in a pro-BBC mood (for now).
