This fairytale is a little like the myth Samson and Deliah, in which Deliah finds out his long hair is how Samson maintains his strength to kill fierce beasts and without him knowing cuts it off. The witch commands Rapunzel to throw down her hair, so she can climb up her ivory tower and capture her, for she knows that it is the source of her power.
