The Three Little Pigs

Almost everyone knows the story of The Three Little Pigs – but it’s one of those stories that you can hear again and again. Our audio is based it on the version of Joseph Jacobs – in which the wolf huffs and puffs and the pigs exclaim by the hairs of their chiny chin chins.

There was once a family of pigs. The mother pig was very poor, and so she sent her three little pigs out to seek their fortunes. The first that went off met a man with a bundle of straw, and said to him:
“Please, man, give me that straw to build me a house.”
Which the man did, and the little pig built a house with it. Presently came along a wolf, and knocked at the door, and said:
“Little pig, little pig, let me come in.”
To which the pig answered:
“No, no, by the hair of my chiny chin chin.”
The wolf then answered to that:
“Then I’ll huff, and I’ll puff, and I’ll blow your house in.”
So he huffed, and he puffed, and he blew his house in, and ate up the little pig.
The second little pig met a man with a bundle of furze, and said:
“Please, man, give me that furze to build a house.”
Which the man did, and the pig built his house. Then along came the wolf, and said:
“Little pig, little pig, let me come in.”
“No, no, by the hair of my chiny chin chin.”
“Then I’ll puff, and I’ll huff, and I’ll blow your house in.”
So he huffed, and he puffed, and he puffed, and he huffed, and at last he blew the house down, and he ate up the little pig.
The third little pig met a man with a load of bricks, and said:
“Please, man, give me those bricks to build a house with.”
So the man gave him the bricks, and he built his house with them. So the wolf came, as he did to the other little pigs, and said:
“Little pig, little pig, let me come in.”
“No, no, by the hair of my chiny chin chin.”
“Then I’ll huff, and I’ll puff, and I’ll blow your house in.”
Well, he huffed, and he puffed, and he huffed and he puffed, and he puffed and huffed; but he could not get the house down. When he found that he could not, with all his huffing and puffing, blow the house down, he said:
“Little pig, I know where there is a nice field of turnips.”
“Where?” said the little pig.
“Oh, in Mr. Smith’s Home-field, and if you will be ready tomorrow morning I will call for you, and we will go together, and get some for dinner.”
“Very well,” said the little pig, “I will be ready. What time do you mean to go?”
“Oh, at six o’clock.”
Well, the little pig got up at five, and got the turnips before the wolf came (which he did about six) and who said:
“Little Pig, are you ready?”
The little pig said: “Ready! I have been and come back again, and got a nice potful for dinner.”
The wolf felt very angry at this, but thought that he would be up to the little pig somehow or other, so he said:
“Little pig, I know where there is a nice apple-tree.”
“Where?” said the pig.
“Down at Merry-garden,” replied the wolf, “and if you will not deceive me I will come for you, at five o’clock tomorrow and get some apples.”
Well, the little pig bustled up the next morning at four o’clock, and went off for the apples, hoping to get back before the wolf came; but he had further to go, and had to climb the tree, so that just as he was coming down from it, he saw the wolf coming, which, as you may suppose, frightened him very much. When the wolf came up he said:
“Little pig, what! are you here before me? Are they nice apples?”
“Yes, very,” said the little pig. “I will throw you down one.”
And he threw it so far, that, while the wolf was gone to pick it up, the little pig jumped down and ran home. The next day the wolf came again, and said to the little pig:
“Little pig, there is a fair at Shanklin this afternoon, will you go?”
“Oh yes,” said the pig, “I will go; what time shall you be ready?”
“At three,” said the wolf. So the little pig went off before the time as usual, and got to the fair, and bought a butter-churn, which he was going home with, when he saw the wolf coming. Then he could not tell what to do. So he got into the churn to hide, and by so doing turned it round, and it rolled down the hill with the pig in it, which frightened the wolf so much, that he ran home without going to the fair. He went to the little pig’s house, and told him how frightened he had been by a great round thing which came down the hill past him. Then the little pig said:
“Hah, I frightened you, then. I had been to the fair and bought a butter-churn, and when I saw you, I got into it, and rolled down the hill.”
Then the wolf was very angry indeed, and declared he would eat up the little pig, and that he would get down the chimney after him. When the little pig saw what he was about, he hung on the pot full of water, and made up a blazing fire, and, just as the wolf was coming down, took off the cover, and in fell the wolf; so the little pig put on the cover again in an instant, boiled him up, and ate him for supper, and lived happy ever afterwards.

Dear Kenney and others – this is the REAL story. The ones you have read or heard elsewhere are fakes. … seriously this is an old version and is how the story was told for many years – even when I was young. It’s only very recently that the pigs don’t get eaten .

Yes I quite agree. There are lots of fairy tales with horrible endings in which the characters get eaten up including A Little Red Riding Hood. There are other fairytale adaptations of this story including in which other characters aren’t so fortunate.

The Three Little Pigs is a funny tale. The Wolf is quite greedy and knocks on the doors of the three little pigs in turn speaking to them the famous words ” little Pig, Little Pig, Let me come in” and each of the Pigs safe guards their house, to stop the Wolf coming in with the words ” no, no, no not by the hair’s of my chinny chin, chin”

Thanks, this is observant. The Wolf is a character we remember well in the story. When he gets angry at the Little pigs it is because they will not let them into their houses. And he says to each of them ‘Then I’ll huff and I’ll puff and Ill blow your house down’

The Story of the Three Little Pigs is a great story. The Little Pigs are afraid of the big bad Wolf who threaten to blow their house down, but they each remain strong with their houses of straw, wood and brick.

“The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs” by Jon Scieszka and illustrated by Lane Smith is a retelling of “The 3 Little Pigs” as told on storynory. It is told from Al, the wolf’s, perspective as he tries to clear his name. His claim is that he went to the pigs’ houses because he needed to borrow a cup of sugar for his sick granny’s cake. He had a cold so as he knocked on the first two pigs door, he accidentally blew their houses down with a sneeze. And Al couldn’t just leave them there to spoil so he ate them. As the cops showed up at the third house, he was having a sneeze attack and they twisted his story. This perspective is totally different than the original and portrays the pigs as evil and the wolf as good. The illustrations compliment this by making the pigs angry and ugly while the wolf is seen as a gentle creature. The plot is simple and direct but is also entertaining to the reader because Al is a sort of comedian. The last line of “But maybe you could loan me a cup of sugar” makes you chuckle.
The traditional Three Little Pigs story on Storynory is similar to a retelling of the story called The Three Pigs by David Weisner. In both of these stories the pigs are extremely smart and save themselves from getting eaten. The big difference is that the ending in The Three Pigs is completely different than the traditional version. All three pigs stay alive and adventure into other traditional stories. The illustrations in The Three Pigs add a lot to the story and make it come to life.
The Three Little Pigs retold and illustrated by Steven Kellogg:
In this retelling of the original Three Little Pigs tale, the pigs, their mother, and the wolf are given specific names like Serafina Sow and Tempesto, whereas, in the tradition version as on storynory, no specific names are given. Kellogg creates an interesting and more modern context for his retelling. The Sow family creates a waffle business that multiplies by the end of the book. Furthermore, they refer to taxicabs, a paper plane, and “tough times”, which are more modern concepts. In addition, the retelling is rather humorous because the wolf uses a large balloon that lifts him into the air above the chimney of the Sow’s brick house, so that he can sneak in that way. However, the Sow family members are waiting at the bottom of the chimney with a waffle iron.
This original story of the Three Little Pigs as seen in story nory is very different from a re-telling called The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig. The original for instance is much more violent. Two of the pigs and the wolf get eaten, where as in the re-telling no one is physically harmed at all, the pig just destroys their houses. Also the plain fact that in the re-telling the Pig is the bad character is very different. It is not usual to think of a pig going after a wolf, but that is the case in the re-telling. The types of houses are also varied between these two stories. The re-telling is more modernized so they use things such as concrete, and barbed wire where the original just has sticks and straw. The way they are destroyed also makes a difference. In the original he just blows them down, but in this re-telling he actually uses tools like a jack hammer to knock down the house.
Comparing this three little pigs to a variant I recently read shows many differences, as would be expected. In the traditional three little pigs as posted by Story Nory, the first two pigs were eaten up because of their foolishness. However in the variant I read (The Three Little Guinea Pigs by Peter Kavanagh), the first guinea pig was taken to a home and the other two were left behind and very sad. Eventually, the parents bought the other two guinea pigs and all three lived together happily ever after. Clearly, the violence and abruptness of the first is much more than that of the retelling. In both stories, the plot was simple and direct; it was not deeply developed. The three little guinea pigs did not fear for their lives, only their happiness; they did not want to be taken to new homes without each other. In the Three Little Pigs, the pigs feared for their lives from the big bad wolf. The language of The Three Little Guinea Pigs was not in keeping with the original tale; clearly it was retold and the old language was not replicated. Similarly, the retelling was adapted for modern times; guinea pigs were eaten back when the Three Little Pigs was orally passed down and the whole idea of going to a pet store and finding a pet would not even be recognized. The retelling of The Three Little Pigs was adapted from The Three Little Pigs and made for modern times; the violence was decreased and evil was not as present.
This story on StoryNory can be considered a retelling as it contains additional scenes from the traditional telling of The Three Little Pigs. In another version of The Three Little Pigs, retold by Brenda Parkes, the plot sticks to the traditional plot of this well-known story. This version can be considered a variant as it does not change much of the story. However both stories can be considered literature that falls under the traditional fantasy label as the plots and characters of both are simple. In Parkes retelling, the illustrations are lively and engaging and do a good job of complimenting the plot.
Comparing The Three Little Pigs by Gavin Bishop with the version on StoryNory by Joseph Jacobs I found them to be very similar. Only slight word variations made the texts different. The story follows the same pattern and the ending is the same. This is a funny story. The pictures in the version from Bishop add a lot to the story. Students will enjoy this story for a long time to come.

Dear Mateo, this is a very old English story and text. It has passed the test of time. I think the author probably knew more about grammar than you do.
This story has terrible narration, I’m sorry to say. Pronunciation and accent are totally different things and it seems that this narrator knows no difference. The grammar and punctuation in the story is also quite poor, especially when used as a teaching aid.

Mainly it’s a crazy and stupid version of the real classic tale.Animation and movement=golden A+.

I liked the story i think it was pretty good and sort of a little funny but i wonder why the momma pig was poor.Maybe she didnt have enough food 4 her and her little pigs 2 survive on but i sort of feel bad 4 the little pigs that got eatin by the mean hungry wolf in the story and the only 2 pigs that was left was the 1 little pig & the momma pig. but close to the end of the story it didnt talk about the momma pig only at the beging so i wonder if the momma pig had lived in thwhole story and thats my comment on the story of the 3 little pigs <3

Dear Gamma, This is the original story. It was told to me from early age. I do eat bacon, but apart from that I haven’t turned it to anything too nasty – not a serial killer anyway.
This story is more violent then the one i tell… i dont think it would be appropiate for little kids since the pigs get eaten

I knew the Americanized PG version where no pig or wolf is eaten. The wolf blows the straw and wooden house bug the pigs run to the brick house. When the wolf can’t blow that one down, yes he comes down the chimney and burns his butt, but he runs out of the brick house and leaves the pigs to celebrate their victory and they chant “Whose afraid of the big bad wolf”.
I like this version better, but would tell my son the pg version.

Dear Josany, There is certainly nothing changed about our version of the Three Little Pigs. It’s the original version and at least 200 years old. I”m afraid that you have been reading modern stories where no pigs get eaten. I hope that your seven year old does not eat sausages or bacon.

Dear Jess, Thanks for your comment. The Three Little Pigs has been told to small children since time immemorial – and it’s simple to understand – - and so in the junior section.
I don’t think that this story, and all it’s “boiling and eating all up,” should be in your Junior Section. It’s a fine story, told well, but placing it in this section is inappropriate. Or perhaps you could define what is meant by “junior”.

This was a funny story. I liked it when the wolf came and ate them. I liked the wolf.
I thought that the 3 little pigs build there houses at the same time and that the wolf huffs and puffs until he blows the 2 little pigs house down and the 2 little pigs go to the 3rd little pig’s house and than the 3 little pigs live happily ever after.

I played this story for my 2yr. old grandson; who sat transfixed for the hole 9 1/2 min. it took to play. He really liked the flash animation. this is the longest that he has sat still for a story, weather I am reading or the computer is reading. Tomorrow we will try another story from your web site.
