You can ask yourself, "Do you believe his story?" or is it just the sort of story that sailors like to make up? He is telling the story to a master who is not impressed. And even if you do believe his story, you can see that he is quite boastful. He tries to tell the Serpent that he is a rich man who is important with the Pharaoh, but the Serpent sees through that. But The Smart Young Man clearly is a great talker and story teller. Do you think he is right that you can talk your way out of any situation with a good story? But I think most people will just enjoy this story because it is a good yarn.
