I think the young man is telling the master of the ship a story about the master of the ship, not himself. Maybe he is saying the King could be like the Serpent, who has the power to end the life of a poor sailor that fate played a hard hand at. However, the Serpent hears the sailor speak well of his other ship-mates and that they had bad luck and Serpent sees that luck also brought him safely to shore. Serpent also has had bad luck and chooses to use his power for good. So I think the smart young man is saying the King may also have had some bad luck in his life and knows how it feels, and he may like to help you, so that others will hear what a kind and generous king he is, as even kings die and would like to be remembered well...But the master of the ship cannot see it like that, so he's doomed.
