Katie and the Witch’s Swap
We’re so pleased to have Katie and The Witch’s Swap available as the first Storynory digital App in the Apple Store, with its cool school girl antics it makes the perfect story in the Ordinary Witch series.
Our app is also available as an MP3 download and PDF. Please note this is the only story on the site that comes at a price. It does, however, come with 17 charming illustrations. The app is synced with the pictures and full text.

Katie and the Witch’s Swap comes as an app in the Apple store. But if you don’t have an iPod Touch, iPad, or iPhone, don’t worry, you can also get it as a simple audio file and pdf.
Both versions come with 17 original and gorgeous pictures by our artist Tia. There are 18 minutes of audio narration by Natasha. It’s a must for all fans of our Katie series.
The App version has a three-way sync with the audio, pictures and text. It makes it ideal for young listeners to read and listen along at the same time. It also displays the full pictures beautifully if you tilt the device into landscape mode. You can scroll through the pictures and pages by swiping the screen.

It’s a lovely picture book on the iPhone which my 4 year old can look at and listen to on the way to school. I love that you can choose between text or pictures along with the audio. My 8 year old hasn’t played with it yet, but the 4 year old asks for it every day and the 6 year old will love that it’s Natasha reading! It’s a great price for a picture book with audio! I hope StoryNory comes out with more.

Katie and the Witch’s Swap is a chapter, in which the two characters of Katie and Isis, find out some interesting things about each other, they otherwise wouldn’t have known unless they had ‘swapped identities’ They lead two very different lives, Isis in her fancy mansion and Katie with her mum who drives a cool car with a seat belt that clicks pretty quick.

iam the biggest fan of storynory my favorite all about katie the witch. eventhough iam 30 now,….its seems very easy to understand the story. about the apps. for it’s a good idea but apple in my country very expensive….so i don’t have the software. now i just download from my netbook , and transfer to my mobile , i have listened to them everyday….to improve my english skills. but could you give me a favor? can you put some pictures in it….just like you reading comic books. because i want to show the pictures for my students. i also download the stories from other resources like british council, which is they have the story with the pictures, puppets to print, songs.

Hey! You’re welcome! It’s nice that you are open to feedback that is less than pure praise. I do apologize for the unsavory tone of my first post. I am a bit cranky about these issues having just had a tussle with an iphone app developer who set up there (initially free) kid’s app to include little extras you can buy just by clicking a button. Of course children don’t understand the ramifications of that and they click, click click!
I actually am a small business owner and do have some idea of what you are grappling with. And like I said before, I have no problem at all with you asking for $2. I just have a problem with you asking my daughter to ask me for $2. I’ve found that when changing my business model even the slightest, especially when dealing with the retail public, it is essential to protect my brand and not alienate my customers. Storynory is a site which many parents trust to just hit play and walk away. Your stories have always been totally child safe, (if a bit scary at times!) Throwing a sales pitch into the story just works to corrode that trust. Sure there are many many parents who will not have a problem with it. But there are some who will. Obviously I fall into the latter group but I doubt I am alone.
Apple have very kindly included Katie and the Witch’s Swap in New and Noteworthy pullout in the iTunes store (US view, Books section under apps). We really do need a lucky break with this app, and hope this might perk up our sales a bit ! Also got a second customer review for which we are really grateful.

We love stornory! Storynory is amazing, and I don’t expect amazing content for free. Everything costs money to make, and people need to understand that nothing is “free” – you either pay for a service, or it is paid for by advertisers who get to have your attention. Even on public radio and TV, there are ads (call them ‘sponsorships’ or what you will, they are still ads).

Dear Caroline Our Montessori schools sponsor can only be seen as aimed at parents. So far we ourselves have one product for sale. My dream would be to make enough money to support Storynory out of the text adds in the sidebar. It’s mostly people who arrive here by accident who click those. We have a lot of traffic – that’s 750,000 page views a month – Sometime this year we will go through a million page views a month – but it’s still way off from making enough money for us.
We will get there eventually, I think in three or four years time – but can we survive in the meantime?
I’m working on building that traffic, but we have to move with the times and invest all the time to stay ahead of the competition which includes big media with deep pockets.
I kind of feel from your comments that you have probably not been in the position of trying to make a business break even and support itself. There is an enormous about of stress and pressure. I think maybe our audience is too resistant to paying for anything. Maybe we can find a new paying audience in the app store. Maybe we can just about struggle on until the audience is sufficient to pay us out of “clicks” on the text adds… .It’s all maybe.
But in the meantime we are trying our best to give you our best.
That’s fine but you should know that I am turning to storynory less and less because I never know if the story I am about to play to the children is going to start off with an appeal for money in the intro. I would feel more comfortable if I knew that the content was restricted to stories for the kids and the marketing was directed at the adults.
Dear Caroline, Thank you for your more constructive comments. However, I don’t see how your business model is any different from the one we are offering, except it would give people less. We could hardly offer a subscription service without marketing it.
We have a free story every week including this one. We are only asking payment for a really enhanced story that we have spent quite a bit of time and money on.
Anyway, let’s make peace and agree to differ and do keep listening.
One idea would be to look at Pandora’s business model. They allow a certain # of listening hours for free. But a paid membership allows unlimited listening without commercials.
If you were to offer such a service I will raise my hand right now and sign up to be your first member. I think your content is fantastic and very well produced. In exchange for this fee I would expect to have access to stories that are free from sales pitches aimed directly at the kids, however.
I’m sorry if you found my comments shocking. I did not intend to imply that you have no right to ask for money. On the contrary, I wholeheartedly agree that you should be earning an income and I would be happy to support the site financially. I do not think that $2 is too much at all. What I object to is setting up a situation where the children who have come to know things a certain way are suddenly put in the position of trying to coax money out of their parents. I find the manipulation of children to achieve marketing goals offensive. Perhaps if you offered all the extras for a premium membership? Or began a new, paid series, or created books or cds that were for sale. Or something else. Just leave my kids out of the decision making process of how the money gets spent in my house, please. Thank you.

If you are too stingy to pay $2 to support Storynory then I’m shocked… well nothing surprises me.
We give a huge amount away for free… 99.9%. For instance Swan Lake at Christmas had original music and original pictures… we pay for those, as well as for the actor to read it, as well as all my time which is free. I haven’t added it all up but perhaps that story cost us approaching $1000 on its own.
And as for comparing us to drug dealers…well thanks a million.
This story comes as an interactive app in the Apple Store… that took a lot of work to get it like that. We thought some people would say they don’t have iPads etc, and perhaps it’s not a huge thing to ask $2 for the story.
This feels like bait-and-switch. You get the kids hooked on the katie series and then start asking for money? “the first one is free” is a good strategy for dealers of illegal recreational drugs but perhaps you could find a business model that would not feel like you are twisting a parent’s arm behind her back and asking for $2.

Dear Toni, You don’t need an mp3 player. You can play an mp3 on your computer. All our stories are mp3s. Download the story and click it.
Toni, it’s not really in sequence. I think Natasha was using the words “follows on” a bit loosely. It’s only $1.99.. That’s what parents are for !
Hi Storynory Fan, Thank you so much for buying our app. I’m really surprised to hear that it’s saying it’s not compatible, but I think there is probably a very easy solution. You need to update the software on your iPad. So plug it in to your computer. Go into iTunes. Click on the iPad icon in the left sidebar of iTunes. Then you should get a window with various options. Click the one to update software. This will give you the latest operating system on your iPad. Please let me know if this works.
Bertie, I had bought the app for the iPad and it wouldn’t download so I had to go to iTunes on my computer to download it. After it finished downloading I had synced it to the iPad and it said it wasn’t compatible with this iPad. Please help!
plus if Katie’s revenge is a sequence to this story then some people might not get whats going on.
Bertie not to sound rude, but i don’t think its very fair to make people pay money to listen to one of the stories, i mean not everyone has an mp3 player or one of those other things, but everyone likes the Katie stories,so u r actually limiting the amount of listeners. i know i cant hear this story b/c i don’t have an mp3 player.
To Dilly and others asking for free copies, I thought I would suggest this:
Say to your parents that for $1.99 they are not just buying an app, they are supporting a site which has provided free and high quality stories for five years and intends to do so for ever more. Our stories are both entertaining and mind-expanding. I think parents understand about supporting good causes, especially for less than the price of a comic or daddy’s next glass of beer ! As for a DVD, even the cheapest is more expensive than this lovely story.

We give a free story away every single week, and are trying to find a way to make some more money to run Storynory. I want to put more and more free things on the site, including pictures and interactive things, and I want to make sure we have some money coming in to secure our future. This is an experiment. It has 17 lovely pictures…. and also I spent all Christmas and New Year programming the app. Honestly, it’s a bargain !

Hi Michelle, We will have a new Katie story very soon totally free, as usual, maybe this Sunday. It’s written and about to be recorded and will be called Katie’s Revenge. And I aim to put a sample of the Wtich’s Swap on this page. But for now, this story is one you have to buy. But you do get all the 17 illustrations which we aren’t able to do for a normal story..
You can ask an grown-up with a credit card to buy the mp3 file so you don’t need an Iphone etc.
