What is WordPress? It's free software that runs a blog in which you can make daily entries and visitors can post comments. Storynory is powered by WordPress. You can install it via the Bluehost panel, under Fantastico.
What web skills will I need to build a website? Actually, you can get started with very little. WordPress will set up a website/blog for you when you intsall it, and Bluehost also comes with a tool called "site builder" that makes things easy for you. But it's good to pick up a few bits of know-how so that you can go onto the next stage.
What is a gigabyte? It is a is a unit of computer storage equal to one billion (that is, a thousand million) bytes. For instance, your computer might typically store 50 (gigs) on your hard drive.
What is a domain? A domain is the address assigned to a website - for instance Storynory's domain is http://storynory.com or alternatively http://www.storynory.com. It is also used for email addresses so you can email [email protected]. Domains also have a variety of extensions such as .net, .info, .org, .co.uk, etc. Domains are officialy registered as belonging to their owners.
How can you host 6 domains on one account? You buy one Bluehost login and can register 6 domain names from your control panel. Strictly speaking, the extra 5 names are subordinate to the top level, but in practice nobody will notice. It costs $10 to register each extra domain, but otherwise you can host 6 websites for one price.
What are IMAP /POP? These are different types of email accounts. POP is the most common. It allows you to download your emails to a client (program) such as Outlook. IMAP is less used. It allows you to leave your emails up on the server so you can access them later from a different computer. Bluehost lets you have lots and lots of different email addresses - you everyone at your school or business could probably have their own email, all managed through your Bluehost account.
What does transfer mean? Every time somebody hits your website, some information such as text, pictures, colors or audio is transferred to their computer. Some of this information is more bulky than others. For instance, text is very light, and pictures are rather heavy. The amount of information passed over is called "transfer". 999 gigabytes is a very generous monthly allowance of transfer.
What is SSL? Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is used to create a secure webpage for something like a finacial transaction or entering personal data. It encrypts the information you enter before it is transfered across the web, preventing snoopers.
What is FTP? File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a way to upload your files onto your website. You can do this from within the Bluehost control panel, or using a free client such as FileZilla.
What do you know about your visitors? Bluehost gives you a wide range of non-personally identifiable stats about your visitors, including daily number of visitors, what key words they entered into Google to reach you, and what countries they come from. These logs are nicely presented for you in a variety of formats including AWstats and Webalizer.
What are CGI, Ruby (RoR), Perl, PHP, MySQL? These are programming languages that can run applications on Bluehost, except for MySQL which is a free data base. PHP and MySQL are necessary for running some applications like WordPress, but you need not worry too much about them, as it all happens in the background.
What are FrontPage extensions? FrontPage is Microsoft's popular program for designing web pages. Extensions are plugins that extend its capability. To use them, you need a webhost, like Bluehost, that is ready to run extensions.
Bluehost is based in America, I'm in Europe / Asia, does that matter? Not in the least, after all, Storynory uses Bluehost, and we are based in London. The web is global. In fact, hosting in the USA is much cheaper than in Europe, and the weak dollar makes it even better value.
