Chapter 10: The Guardian of The Gates

In this Wiz Oz Activity you will make some Green Spectacles like the ones Dorothy and her companions are given by The Guardian of the Gates in chapter 10. You will also imagine and draw your own shinning Emerald city that the travellers see with there green spectacles when they enter the city in chapter 11.

The Emerald City

The yellow brick road leads to the Emerald city, that Dorothy and her travelling companions reach in Chapter 11. The city is aptly named because (as you may know) the precious stones called emeralds are green coloured. The city is both magnificent and spectacular and everything is emerald green. Oz has commanded all its people to wear The Green Spectacles that shield them from its brilliant dazzling light.

Dororthy and her travelling companions are given The Green Spectacles to wear in Chapter 10 by the Guardian of the Gates before entering the city and meeting with the Great Oz. Once Dorothy and her friends are wearing them, they see everything green, like those who live in the Emerald City.

Activity

Draw your own Emerald City as you picture it to be in your imagination from reading the chapters. (remember the Palace where Oz lives). Next, make some green spectacles as follows:

  1. Make two cylinder shapes from pieces of cardboard and glue them together to form the glasses.
  2. Find some green material and cello-tape it to the end
  3. Make two small holes in the cylinder shapes and thread some string through ( to hang around your neck)
  4. Find some tin foil to seal around the edges of the glasses to act as hinges.

Now return to your Emerald city picture and put your Green Wiz Oz Spectacles on. Pick one of your favourite characters - say the Lion, the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman or Dorothy - and imagine you are that character venturing through the Emerald city to meet with the Great Oz in his throne palace. The green spectacles will help you see everything in green just like they do.
