Hermes is the messenger of the Greek gods. The Romans knew him as Mercury. He is often shown flying with winged sandals. He's also the protector of travellers and god of boundaries. He is quick witted and full of clever tricks.
In Homer's epic poem, the Odyssey, Hermes appears to Odysseus and warns him that his companions have been turned into pigs by the witch, Circe. He gives Odysseus herbs to protect him from Circe's enchantments.
In Hesiod, when the gods gave Pandora gifts, Hermes' presents were "lies, seductive words, and a bad character."
